Over the last few weeks, I’ve been experimenting with growing and selling plants from home. What started as a simple hobby has slowly grown into a potential side project, and I wanted to share my journey so far. I’ve listed Carolina Reaper plants for sale on Gumtree, started offering herbs, and recently began growing alpine strawberries. I’m also exploring the idea of drying herbs and selling them online.

Listing Carolina Reaper Plants on Gumtree
My journey Growing and Selling Plants from Home began with one of the hottest chili peppers in the world: the Carolina Reaper. I started growing them from seed as a hobby and ended up with a few healthy, established plants. With nothing to lose, I decided to try listing the Carolina Reaper plants for sale on Gumtree, pricing them at £10 each or £25 for all three.
So far, I haven’t sold any, but I’ve been encouraged by the number of views my ad has received. People seem interested — I’ve had a few clicks and even one or two messages. I’m learning that patience and timing are key, especially when you’re new to selling. The right buyer may take time, but the interest shows there’s potential.
If you’re thinking of doing the same, make sure your photos are clear, your descriptions are honest, and your pricing is fair. I’ve also learned that updating your ad regularly can help keep it visible.

Herbs for Sale on Gumtree
Encouraged by the response to my chili ad, I decided to expand into herbs. I started small — rocket, chives, and basil — growing them in containers from seed. I packaged a few into small cartons and listed them on Gumtree under the tagline: “Grown from seed by me as part of a hobby.”
Again, I haven’t made a sale yet, but views have been steady. Listing herbs for sale on Gumtree is easy, and it’s clear that people do browse for this sort of thing. I think the appeal lies in the freshness and the personal touch — herbs grown locally, without chemicals, by someone who genuinely enjoys doing it.
Even though I haven’t had any takers yet, the learning process has been worth it. I’ve refined how I label and present my products and even looked into seasonal trends to figure out when people are most likely to buy.

Growing Alpine Strawberries to Sell
My latest project is growing alpine strawberries to sell. These plants are smaller than traditional strawberries but incredibly flavourful and aromatic. They’re ideal for small gardens or containers, and they look lovely when fruiting.
Right now, they’re still in the early stages, growing from seed under lights. Once they’re ready, I’ll list them on Gumtree like the others. I’m really excited about these — they’re not commonly sold in supermarkets, which makes them a little special.
What I like about growing alpine strawberries is how compact and manageable they are. They’re perfect for people with limited space who still want something tasty and a bit different.
Investigating Drying Herbs to Sell Online
With fresh herbs in progress, I’m now exploring how to dry herbs and sell them online. This adds a whole new level of complexity, especially around hygiene regulations and packaging. I’ve been researching local council requirements and what it would take to comply with food safety rules in the UK.
I’ve started experimenting with air drying in a ventilated area and testing how long different herbs take to fully dry. I’m also thinking about how to package them in a way that’s both professional and eco-friendly. Selling dried herbs has big potential — they last longer, are easier to post, and open up opportunities for selling beyond my local area.
Final Thoughts
Although I haven’t made a sale yet, this whole process has been a great learning experience. I’ve listed Carolina Reaper plants for sale, offered herbs on Gumtree, and started growing alpine strawberries. I’m also excited about the idea of eventually selling dried herbs online.
If you’re thinking about doing something similar, my advice is simple: start small, stay patient, and keep experimenting. Selling plants online isn’t an overnight success story — but with each step, I’m building something that could grow into a rewarding and sustainable venture.
